David Meacock, Technical Director at Cistermiser, describes why they won the Water Efficiency category at the 2022 BMA Sustainability Awards, and how the company approaches their broader sustainability agenda.
Cistermiser, a leading commercial washroom water management solutions provider, is delighted to have won the Water Efficiency category at the BMA Sustainability Awards 2022.
A big part of what the Bathroom Manufacturers Association members can do to drive sustainability is around water efficiency. Taking away that coveted award at the 2022 ceremony is, therefore, significant.
Leading with innovation
Cistermiser has spent more than four decades innovating and developing solutions that help FMs, local authorities, health trusts and building owners. Every product we have developed has always been about saving resources. It is incredibly rewarding to have the team’s phenomenal work on EasyflushEVO recognised by a panel of independent judges who praised its “new and novel approach” to tackling water loss and eradicating the #leakyloo issue.
Awareness of the #leakyloo problem, and the volume of wasted water, is increasing. According to experts Waterwise, a leaking toilet wastes between 215 and 400 litres of clean drinking water on average every single day. Between 5% and 8% of toilets are estimated to leak, adding up to around 400 million litres of water leaking from UK toilets daily. Against a backdrop of the climate crisis and the Road to Net Zero, losses like these are clearly unsustainable.
Solving #leakyloos
The EasyflushEVO revolutionary flushing valve solves the problem of leaking toilet cisterns and saves up to 78,475 litres of water per unit per year. This was a significant inspiration for its development. Although it might not single handily solve this country’s ‘leaky loos’ problem, it goes a long way to raising standards and awareness.
The product has revolutionised WC flushing by combining the previously unattainable benefits of non-touch and leak-free flushing. The patented flush design means there is no flushing seal below the waterline, so unlike traditional flush valves, it will not leak due to debris, scale, or seal degradation. As a company, we are proud to contribute to the positive shift towards making this industry more sustainable.
Sustainability on our agenda
In addition to our ceaseless commitment to water saving, we also recognise that sustainability must have wider-reaching ambitions within our organisation. As a proud UK manufacturer, we have to analyse how products leave the factory, how we work with our supply chain to reduce our carbon footprint, and how we use our resources to make sure we’re behaving in a way that echoes what we preach.
Ensuring that we minimise unnecessary packaging, and moving to recyclable packaging, for instance, makes recycling easier for the end user and reduces our environmental impact.
We anticipate that with more revolutionary and innovative products developed by our team of experts, we will continue to push the sustainability agenda within our sector and win more recognition and awards.
