Why better bathroom marketing starts with behaviour

Bathroom marketing is rarely as simple as putting the right product in front of the right person at the right time.

The sector has multiple audiences, complex buying journeys and decisions influenced by everyone from manufacturers and merchants to retailers, designers, specifiers, installers and, ultimately, homeowners. And while we like to think buying decisions rest on specification, price, performance and availability, people rarely decide so neatly.

That’s where behavioural science comes in. At Leopard Co, we’re a full-service marketing agency powered by behavioural science. Our proprietary BxROAR approach helps us understand not only what audiences are doing, but why, and then build more effective marketing from it. For bathroom brands, where trust, familiarity, recommendation and ease of doing business can be every bit as influential as product features, that matters.

B2B buyers are still people

There’s a tendency in B2B marketing to assume professional audiences behave differently. Buyers have targets, procurement processes and budgets, so naturally we give them rational arguments.

But behind every specification, stocking decision or purchase order is a person. People use mental shortcuts. We’re influenced by familiarity, social proof, timing, perceived risk and what others around us are doing. For example:

  • An installer is more likely to remember a brand that is distinctive and easy to recall.
  • A retailer feels more confident introducing a new range when they can see other businesses trust it.
  • A specifier faced with dozens of choices benefits from information that makes the decision easier, not more to process.

Understanding those behaviours makes marketing far more useful.

Introducing BxROAR

Behavioural science isn’t something we add after the strategy is written. It sits at the heart of how we work. Our BxROAR framework brings together:

  • Behaviour: how people really make decisions.
  • Research: the market, audience and commercial challenge.
  • Opportunity: the space where a brand can make the greatest difference.
  • Activation: integrated activity across paid, earned, shared and owned channels.
  • Results: the outcomes that matter, and what we learn from them.

It gives us a clear route from a client’s commercial objective to the behaviour we need to influence, and then to the activity most likely to achieve it. Sometimes the answer is PR. Sometimes it’s social, advertising, creative or a better website journey. Often, it’s several working together. The important part is starting with the problem, not the channel.

What does that mean for bathroom brands?

Take one of the industry’s biggest challenges: building preference among installers. They’re busy, under pressure and making repeated decisions about what to recommend, buy and fit. Telling them a product is good may not be enough. Behavioural science asks us to look deeper:

  • How easy is the brand to recognise, and to source?
  • What evidence reduces the perceived risk of trying something new?
  • What are trusted peers saying about it?
  • What friction might be stopping the desired behaviour?

Answering those creates a very different brief from “we need an installer campaign”. The same applies to retailers, merchants, designers and specifiers: different pressures, motivations and barriers, but one consistent brand.

From insight to integrated marketing

Insight only matters if it turns into action, which is why we combine behavioural science with full-service expertise across strategy, creative, PR, social, digital and advertising. The audience journey determines the channel mix, not the other way round.

In a B2B sector, that’s powerful. PR builds credibility, thought leadership demonstrates expertise, social builds familiarity, search captures intent, paid media creates demand, creative makes the brand distinctive and digital experiences remove friction when someone is ready to act. Each touchpoint makes the next more effective.

Putting it into practice with SONAS Bathrooms

Our partnership with fellow Bathroom Association member SONAS Bathrooms is one example. As SONAS builds its presence in the UK, we’re supporting its communications with a focus on increasing awareness among merchants, retailers, installers and specifiers.

It’s the kind of B2B challenge we enjoy: multiple audiences, a growing brand and a clear commercial ambition. And it reinforces what we believe. Good B2B marketing isn’t about making more noise, it’s about understanding whose behaviour matters, what will influence it and how to make the desired action more likely.

Marketing that thinks like people do

Products, channels and technology will keep changing. Human behaviour changes far more slowly. For bathroom brands, the opportunity is to move beyond communicating what you sell and start understanding the behaviours you want to create.

Who needs to notice you? Who needs to trust you? Who needs to recommend you? Who needs to choose you? And what’s stopping them?

Those questions sit at the heart of BxROAR, and of how we approach marketing at Leopard Co. Because your marketing shouldn’t just be seen. It should change what people do.
