The latest episode of Insights Pod is now live and available to stream on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Episode 4, titled “Building for the future: The role of water in the UK’s housing agenda”, brings together Bathroom Association voices to explore how water, regulation, consumer behaviour and data are shaping the future of UK housing and the bathroom sector: all topics included in the latest edition of the member-only Insights publication.

This episode marks an exciting moment for the Bathroom Association as we welcome our new co-host, Daphne Doody-Green, CEO of the Association, alongside long-standing co-host and Communications Manager Lisa Carnwell, Technical Director Andrew McLean, and Research Manager Jane Blakeborough.

A time of evolution for the Association and the sector

Daphne shares her perspective on leading the organisation during a period of real evolution, stressing the need for collaboration across the value chain to tackle complex and interconnected industry challenges. From manufacturers and merchants to installers and policymakers, she highlights that genuine progress on water efficiency, sustainability and housing quality will only happen if the sector pulls together.

Connect Conference and the next generation

The episode also reflects on the Association’s Connect Conference, with a strong focus on:

  • Inclusivity and ensuring a broader range of voices are heard in industry discussions
  • Celebrating the Sustainability Awards and future talent through the 30 under 30 Awards, showcasing the next generation of leaders in the bathroom and water sectors

Water sector reform, smart meters and consumer behaviour

The panel unpacks the implications of the Independent Water Commission’s final report, including:

  • Proposals for a water ombudsman
  • The introduction and wider rollout of smart meters
  • The need for meaningful, long-term reform in the water sector

The conversation also looks at the reality of consumer behaviour around water use, and the gap between what people say and what they do. The panel discuss why education on water efficiency is essential if the UK is to meet future housing, environmental and infrastructure challenges.

Policy, regulation and the role of data

The episode closes with a forward-looking discussion on:

  • Ongoing government consultations on water efficiency standards in homes
  • How to balance regulatory measures, product performance and customer satisfaction
  • An update on the Association’s market data initiative (Market Insights), which will give members robust, accurate market insights to inform decision-making

Overall, this episode is pragmatic, positive and future-focused, looking at how the bathroom industry can contribute to a more resilient, efficient and sustainable housing system in the UK.
