Ideal Standard unveils first look at brand new collections with designers Ludovica + Roberto Palomba

Ideal Standard, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of private and public bathrooms solutionsfor more than 100 years, has revealed the first look at its new products in collaboration with Italian design studio Palomba Serafini Associati.

The partnership, which was first announced in December 2018, sees Ideal Standard draw on its strong design heritage, taking inspiration from previous iconic products to create new, contemporary collections that will drive the brand’s overall design philosophy and shape the bathrooms of the future.

Torsten Türling, CEO of Ideal Standard, said: “Ideal Standard has been a true leader in the world of bathroom design for over a century, so we wanted to tap into this history to inform a new wave of design-led solutions. We’ve looked back at our iconic designs, analysed their intrinsic value and thought about how to transform them to suit modern society – both in terms of aesthetics and functionality.”

Now, Ludovica and Roberto Palomba – masters of international design with over 25 years’ experience delivering innovative bathroom design concepts – have unveiled the first results of their work with Ideal Standard. This comprises a range of unique ceramics and fittings, as well as furniture and a bath tub, and in a bold move sees a return to the use of colour to enhance modern interiors projects.

Timeless ceramics

A true example of reinterpreting a classic masterpiece for the modern era is the Conca basin collection, which takes inspiration from the original, designed in 1972 by Paolo Tilche – a range that signaled a shift from pure practicality to a combination of form and function in the bathroom. Palomba Serafini Associati has taken the traditional rounded basin and revamped it with a minimalistic square design to align with contemporary trends, while retaining its unique, sophisticated character.

Also adding variety to Ideal Standard’s offering is the new Extra basin, a simple square design with sharp edges, which is perfect for bathroom projects that call for a pure geometric shape. Both this and Conca allow for flexible installation, suitable for being wall-hung or integrated on a worktop, and offer greater variation for a range of residential and commercial projects.

Palomba Serafini Associati has also added to Ideal Standard’s toilet and bidet portfolio with the creation of Blend Curve, which perfectly complements the designs of Conca and Extra. An inclusive toilet range with a neutral, round design, Blend Curve is available in wall-hung and back-to-wall options for both toilets and bidets. The products also integrate Ideal Standard’s industry-leading hygiene features, including its revolutionary AquaBlade® flushing technology, making them a strong ally for residential, commercial and healthcare projects.

Fittings with function and beauty

Two new tap fittings have been designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, the first of which is Check, a wide, square design with an exceptionally flat basin mixer and a thin handle for maximum comfort. Although a perfect fit for the new Conca basin, Check blends into any bathroom to add elegance and spirit.

Meanwhile, the must-have Joy design offers a slim, timeless variable that fits to any high-class ceramic and comes with a choice of three different handles. Both Check and Joy have been crafted with smooth surface transitions, making them easy to clean, and include an environmentally-friendly five litre per minute aerator, which reduces water usage.

The collaboration with Palomba Serafini Associati has also seen the creation of two new flush plate ranges, Altes™ and Symfo™. Altes™ is made from beautiful ceramic, giving the plates a unique and elegant ‘silky’ finish, while Symfo™ is a tempered glass plate, with a minimalist and borderless design for a contemporary finish.

Creativity with colour

Colour has played a fundamental role in Ideal Standard’s history, with ceramics particularly in the 1960s and 1970s being chosen to complement surrounding materials. It was during this era that the bathroom moved from a purely functional space to one that supports and enhances the design impact of a building. Now,

Palomba Serafini Associati has evoked this memory with the introduction of a stylish new colour palette.

Ten new ceramic colours – including Black Gloss, Slate Grey, Kashmir, Sage and Pomegranate – join White Gloss and White Silk to offer a complete palette that brings a sense of emotion to bathroom interiors. Some colours hark back to historical Ideal Standard designs but with a contemporary, elegant finish, while others are entirely new and have been designed to complement popular modern materials, such as marble and stone.

The new colour palette will be available on Ideal Standard’s Ipalyss basin in Q3 2019 and on Conca when it launches in 2020.

Commenting on the new collections, Roberto Palomba said: “We’re so proud to finally reveal the results of our special partnership with Ideal Standard. Our approach was simple: quality, intuitive design that gives a nod to the past, while providing the simplicity, purity and elegance that Ideal Standard has become known for and is desired by modern society.

“We’ve also pushed boundaries with the introduction of colour to the ranges. Looking back, the language of colour has been present in many of Ideal Standard’s designs and has been central to their success. Now, we want to introduce colours that revolutionise the way of thinking about the style of a bathroom, with shades such as Mink and Powder Blue evoking not just a simple colour, but new, inspired worlds.”

Ideal Standard’s new collections in partnership with Palomba Serafini Associati were unveiled at ISH 2019. The first designs will be available in Q1 2020.
